Michael L. McCane BIOINSTRUCTOR
I have personally been involved in recruiting, schooling, mentoring, and field training technicians for the last 30 years. I have worked as a service manager, service salesman, field service engineer, as an owner, a general manager, and as a helper when I came out of trade school. As a Field Service Engineer for Georgia Trane in Atlanta, I was fortunate to work for the #1 Service Department at The Trane Company. The in-house training that we received was the reason that I took the job at Trane. This training and the exposure on the State of the Art systems was a tremendous experience as well as a vast wealth of knowledge to gain from.
After nearly 30 years in the HVACR trade, I have come to the conclusion that mechanics and technicians don’t just happen, they are developed over a period of time and investment of the individual. Some of this investment is on the part of the employer, but to succeed, the majority of this investment must be on the part of the technician. This means that the technician must seek to learn and understand the newest technologies and applications that are on the “cutting edge” in whatever branch of the HVACR industry he is involved.
Through personal study, manufacturer’s seminars, shop meetings, continuing education classes, and continuous personal striving to perform at the highest possible level, only then can a technician ‘be’ at the top of his game. He will also be at the top of his value scale to his customers and employer, and thereby also being at the top of the value scale to his family in income, benefits, and rewards overall.
Because of my belief in the necessity of the training system, I have been personally involved in mentoring technicians for most of my tenure. Meeting and working with young technicians is a real passion for me. To assist in the personal as well as technical development of the future of the HVACR industry is an honor and a joy.
