N.A.T.E. stands for North American Technician Excellence, Inc. NATE Certification for Contractors = One-man shops to multi-location businesses are eligible to become NATE C-3 contractors. You become a NATE contractor by employing NATE HVACR Certified Technicians. There are two levels of NATE C-3 Contractors. NATE C-3 Contractors employ at least 50 percent NATE-certified technicians and a NATE C-3 Quality Circle Contractor employs at least 80 percent NATE- certified technicians with at least one NATE-certified technician in each area of installation and/or service offered. NATE Certification for Service Tech’s = To earn NATE Certification you must pass both a CORE and a SPECIALTY exam. Note, this is not a requirement for Ground Source Heat Pump certification. When you pass both a CORE and SPECIALTY service exam in addition to the service certification earned, you are also awarded the Installation certification for that specialty. In this case you would receive a wallet card reflecting the service certification earned and the installation specialty awarded. You would also receive a NATE patch, a certificate and a chevron patch for the service specialty earned.Example: A technician passing a CORE INSTALLATION and an AIR CONDITIONING INSTALLATION test becomes certified in Air Conditioning Installation. The candidate is awarded a wallet card, certificate, and a white NATE patch and blue Air Conditioning Installation chevron. Example: A technician passing a CORE SERVICE and an AIR CONDITIONING SERVICE test becomes certified in Air Conditioning Service. He or she is awarded a wallet card, certificate, and a white NATE patch and burgundy A/C Service chevron. His wallet card reflects that he also has been given credit for A/C Installation, but he does not receive the blue A/C Installation chevron or a certificate for A/C unless he purchases it. HVAC or HVACR Service Technician NATE Exams = The Exams cover information that eight out of ten technicians have an 80 percent chance of encountering at least once in a 12-month period. You should have a few years’ experience in the Specialty Area before attempting to take the Tests. The following is a list of Specialty Tests for the Service Area:
